The history of Pont d'Yeu

If you are staying in Notre Dame de Monts when the tide is high, take the time to discover this marvel of nature - the Pont d'Yeu.

 

 

The Pont d'Yeu holds a special place in the history of Notre Dame de Monts.  Many centuries ago it gradually started to appear when the tide went out, forming a 4km stretch of road jutting out in the sea towards the Ile d'Yeu.   It is only uncovered when the tide is very low which is no doubt where it got its name from.  There is in fact no bridge (pont) in Pont d'Yeu ! 

The true history of Pont d'Yeu

In the 6th century, Saint Martin de Vertou wondered how he could evangelize the inhabitants on Ile d'Yeu.  Satan made a deal with him : he would build a road to get there providing he could take the soul of the first Christian who crossed it.  Saint Martin accepted providing that the work was finished the next day before the cockerel crows.  Satan thought he had got the rooster drunk, but the wine had the opposite effect and instead of sleeping, the cockerel started crowing in the middle of the night, ending Satan's work 3km from the shore...
